How clean is your commercial restroom?
The small room tucked away in a hidden corner of your business space has the power to elevate or destroy your brand’s image. It all depends on how well you maintain it.
Unfortunately, a lot of business owners don’t put enough emphasis on the cleanliness of their restrooms. They are happy with an artificially clean appearance. But this level of inattention could hurt your business image sooner rather than later.
Don’t get caught with a dirty restroom!
Keep your restrooms in tiptop shape at all times and avoid these common restroom cleaning mistakes:
1. Not cleaning your mops thoroughly.
Mops are your best friend when it comes to keeping your floors spotless. But what most people miss is that whatever the mop picks up off the floor requires rigid, thorough cleaning and disinfecting. When you don’t disinfect your mops, you spread bacteria all over your restroom floors! Yikes! To avoid this, use a high-quality disinfectant to go with your spot cleaning and make sure you clean your mop heads. Dry your mop properly before storing because damp fabric is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Also keep in mind that mops don’t last forever and require replacement every so often.
2. Skipping the high-touch areas.
Did you know that your door knobs and faucet handles are dirtier than your toilet seats? This is because these two items – along with your flush handle – are what we call “high touch points,” or areas that get touched too often by too many hands. And hands are notorious for germ spreading. Anything from fecal matter to MRSA could be lurking in these high touch points. To make your facility’s restroom cleaner, make sure to clean and disinfect these high touch points throughout the day and keep them dry. Consider incorporating hands-free technology in your soap and sanitizer dispensers, faucets and toilet flushing systems.
3. Using regular cloth rags (or paper towels) to clean.
If you’re not using microfiber for cleaning, you’re missing out. Using microfiber rags is the best way to give your surfaces a thorough clean, whether you’re wet cleaning or dry cleaning. Microfiber cloths are efficient at picking up both dust and moisture and make for a quicker clean every time.
4. Using generic soap for cleaning.
When you skimp on cleaning supplies, you reduce the quality of cleanliness you’re going to achieve. Generic soap and detergents are no match for the grime, mildew, and other gross things that linger in your commercial restroom. Find a good disinfectant for every spot of your restroom to ensure a long-lasting clean.
5. Never promptly spot cleaning.
Spot cleaning your restrooms prevents the buildup of stains and odors. Most restroom floors are made of ceramic tiles that are naturally porous, which means surface moisture and everything that comes with it – dirt, debris, odors – can seep into and cling onto the floor more easily. This means hard-to-remove stains and nasty odors! Employ a system that makes consistent spot cleaning, a deep clean at the end of each shift, and routine maintenance easily attainable.
6. Not placing wiper mats at the restroom entrance.
Wiper mats scrape off excess debris and moisture from the feet, preventing them from ending up on your restroom floor and any moisture or dirt from making it back to the rest of your establishment’s floors. Win-win!
